AI Privacy at Home: How to Keep Your Personal Information Safe
Where does your information go when you use AI at home? A plain-language guide to privacy-first habits for older adults.
"Where does my information go?" It is the question every older adult should ask before bringing AI into the home — and the one worth answering well.
The three places your information goes
1. The device itself. Reminders, notes, and documents stored on your phone or tablet usually stay there.
2. The company behind the tool. Voice assistants and AI chat services process your requests on their computers. Their privacy policies explain what they keep and how long.
3. People you share with. Family access should always be an explicit choice you make — never a default.
The privacy-first rules we recommend
-
Store sensitive documents carefully. Insurance papers and records belong in private, protected storage — not scattered across free apps.
-
Keep medical details out of chat tools. AI is not a medical service, and there is no reason to share health specifics with it.
-
Never share account numbers or passwords with an AI tool. No good reason exists.
-
Review permissions once a season. A quick look at what each app can access prevents surprises.
About "listening" devices
Voice assistants only send audio after hearing their wake word. Even so, you control them:
- Mute the microphone whenever you like
- Review and delete your voice history in the app
- Turn off recording storage if you prefer
Privacy between family members
Privacy at home is not just about big companies. It is about family, too. Our rule: the older adult controls access. You invite, you limit, you revoke. Family members see what you choose to share — nothing more.
The honest bottom line
Perfect privacy does not exist — not offline, not online. But thoughtful setup, private storage, and clear family permissions put you far ahead of most households. That careful setup is part of every Garrison AI Consulting™ engagement, because trust is the whole point.
