Privacy and AI for Older Adults: What to Know and How to Stay Safe

Older adults have the most to gain from AI and real reasons to be careful with their information. A plain-language guide to keeping it safe.

Older adults have more to gain from AI than most — and also more reason to be careful about privacy. Both things are true, and the balance is easier to find than the headlines suggest.

Start from a fair question

"Who can see my information?" is not paranoia; it is the question every careful adult should ask of any tool. The goal is not to avoid AI. It is to use it with your eyes open.

What's genuinely worth protecting most

  1. Financial details. Account numbers, card numbers, passwords. Everyday AI tasks — reminders, calls, photos — never require them.
  2. Personal documents. Insurance papers, wills, medical notes belong in secure storage with restricted access, not in casual apps.
  3. Your comings and goings. Location and routine information should only be shared with tools and people you chose deliberately.

Five habits that cover most of it

  • Put a lock (PIN, fingerprint, or face) on every device you own.
  • Let the phone screen scam calls and texts rather than silencing that feature.
  • Say no when an app asks for access it clearly does not need — a flashlight app never needs your contacts.
  • Prefer services where you control what each person can see, and where you can revoke access yourself.
  • Ask a person you trust — or a patient service — to review privacy settings with you once a year, the same way you'd check a smoke alarm.

The family dimension

Sharing with family is one of the best parts of these tools — when it is explicit. "I want my daughter to see my appointment reminders" is a decision made by you, recorded, and reversible. Quiet, permission-based sharing respects your independence while keeping your family close.

Privacy as a design choice, not an afterthought

When we built Garrison's At-Home AI Support, this was the first principle: everything a member stores is private by default, family access is granted only with explicit permission and limited to what was agreed, and every viewing or download leaves a record. Privacy is not a checkbox at the end — it is the floor the house is built on.
