Spotting AI-Powered Scams: How to Protect Yourself Without Giving Up on Technology

Scams are getting more convincing — and AI makes some of them harder to spot. Learn the simple habits that keep you safe, in plain language.

The same technology that makes life easier can also make scams more convincing. Voice cloning, fake emails, and chatbots that pretend to be real people are all on the rise. The good news: a few simple habits protect you from almost all of it.

Why scams feel different now

Scammers no longer write sloppy emails full of typos. With AI, they can imitate a grandchild's voice or write a message that sounds exactly like your bank. Technology made the scam better — but the scam is still the same underneath: urgency, secrecy, and fear.

The habits that keep you safe

Slow down. Scams depend on urgency. Any message that says "act now" deserves a second look, not a faster response.

Verify with a second channel. If a message claims to be from a family member, call them on their usual number. If it claims to be from your bank, call the number on your card or statement.

Never move money on a request alone. No legitimate bank, government office, or family member needs you to buy gift cards or wire money to "verify" anything.

Ask someone you trust. A second opinion takes two minutes and stops most scams cold.

Where AI helps you fight back

AI is also a defense tool. It can summarize a suspicious email so you can spot odd requests, explain a message in plain language, and help you check whether a story makes sense before you respond.

You are not alone

If you are unsure about a message you received, you do not have to figure it out by yourself. On a free discovery call, we can talk through what happened and set up simple protections together.
